Gadolinium Introduction
Gadolinium is a rare earth metal with the atomic number 64 and a silvery-white appearance. It was discovered in 1880 by Jean Charles Galissard de Marignac and named after the Finnish chemist Johan Gadolin. Gadolinium is a soft, ductile metal that is highly reactive and is commonly found in nature along with other rare earth elements.
Pure gadolinium metal is typically produced through a process called reduction, in which gadolinium oxide is first converted to gadolinium fluoride through a reaction with hydrofluoric acid. The gadolinium fluoride is then reduced using calcium metal in a high-temperature reaction to produce pure gadolinium metal. The resultant metal is then processed by forging and rolling to make gadolinium foil. In order to retain the magnetic properties, the finished foil shall be anealed again in vacuum furnace.

Application of Gadolinium
Magnetic materials: Gadolinium has strong magnetism and can maintain high magnetism at high temperatures. Therefore, it can be used to manufacture magnetic materials, such as magnetic storage devices, electric motors, sensors, etc.
Nuclear reactor control material: Gadolinium has a high neutron absorption cross-section and can be used as a control material in nuclear reactors to control the rate of nuclear reactions and the release of heat.
Medical imaging material: Gadolinium ions can generate a large amount of transverse relaxation in a magnetic field, which is widely used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Gadolinium metal sheets can be used to manufacture magnets and inductive elements in MRI scanners.
Other applications: Gadolinium metal sheets can also be used to manufacture optical devices, capacitors, and other products.
