Lanthanum
Lanthanum (La), atomic number 57, is a soft, silvery-white metal belonging to the lanthanide series of rare earth elements. With an atomic weight of 138.90547 u, lanthanum has a melting point of 918°C (1684°F), boiling point of 3464°C (6267°F), and density around 6.145 g/cm3. Due to its high reactivity, metallic lanthanum readily oxidizes in air and thus requires special care in storage, typically kept in sealed containers or oil to prevent oxidation.
Lanthanum plays significant roles in electronics and technological applications. It is a key ingredient of high refractive index glass and optical glass, extensively used in camera lenses, telescopes, eyeglasses, and fiber optic communication systems. Lanthanum's unique optical properties significantly enhance the quality and performance of glass when added.
Additionally, lanthanum is used to manufacture battery electrodes, especially as a negative electrode material in nickel-metal hydride rechargeable batteries. These batteries are widely used in portable electronics, electric vehicles, and hybrid vehicles, with lanthanum addition helping to increase the batteries' energy density and cycle life.
