The scandium (sc) content in the earth's crust is not negligible. however, owing to its widespread dispersion in various low-concentration ores, extracting it is challenging. despite industrial applications dating back to the 1990s, scandium remains one of the most expensive commercially available metals.The addition of scandium to aluminum alloys can noticeably reduce the size of metal crystals, enhancing mechanical strength. Given the current manufacturing capabilities of microelectronics at the nanometer level, the grain size of metal sputtering targets has become critical. Consequently, research has been conducted on utilizing scandium in metal sputtering targets to decrease the grain size. Furthermore, several studies are underway to explore potential applications of scandium as a component in electrically conductive single elements or oxides and nitrides.

However, the other type of scandium that is more costly and superior in quality, entails a supplementary distillation purification process applied to the electrolytic grade to obtain an overall purity of 99.9% (99.99% REM).
