Silicon/Silicide
Silicon is a metalloid element with the symbol Si and atomic number 14. It has an atomic weight of 28.0855 u and a density of 2.3296 g/cm3. Silicon has a melting point of 1414°C and boiling point of 2900°C. It commonly exists in the -4 oxidation state. Silicon does not occur naturally in its pure form, instead found abundantly as silicon dioxide (SiO2) and silicates. Silicon is semiconducting in nature and is one of the most important materials in electronics, used extensively in integrated circuits, computer chips, solar cells, and other applications where its semiconductor properties are crucial. Silicon makes up over 90% of the mass of most integrated circuits.
In addition to its elemental form, silicon also forms compounds known as silicides when combined with various metals. Silicides are characterized by their stable crystal structures, high melting points, and excellent electrical conductivity. They find diverse applications in different industries.
One example is Aluminum Silicide (AlSi), which exhibits good thermal stability and low electrical resistivity. It is commonly used in microelectronics and as a contact material in integrated circuits (ICs) due to its compatibility with silicon substrates.
Copper Silicide (CuSi) is another notable silicide. It possesses low resistivity, high thermal stability, and good adhesion to silicon. CuSi is used in the production of advanced semiconductor devices, interconnects, and as a diffusion barrier in microelectronics.
Molybdenum Silicide (MoSi2) is a refractory silicide known for its excellent high-temperature stability and oxidation resistance. It finds application in heating elements, furnace components, and as a protective coating in extreme heat environments.
