Tungsten
Tungsten, also known by its chemical symbol W, is a very dense metal with the atomic number 74. It has the highest melting point of any metal at 3,422°C (6,192°F) and a boiling point of 5,555°C (10,031°F). With a density of 19.25 grams per cubic centimeter, tungsten is remarkably heavy, similar to uranium or gold. Its hardness is also high, which combined with its heat resistance, makes it extremely durable.
Tungsten's properties make it useful for many applications. It is commonly used to produce hard materials like tungsten carbide, one of the hardest carbides. Tungsten carbide is used for cutting tools and industrial processes needing materials that can withstand high temps and wear. Tungsten is also important for making electric filaments and lighting components because of its high melting point and good electrical conductivity.
Additionally, tungsten is used in electronics for its excellent heat conductivity. It is used in heat sinks that protect sensitive electronics. The metal is also used in high-speed steel and superalloys, which are needed for aerospace where materials must endure extreme conditions.
Tungsten also has uses in the military, particularly for its high density. This allows its use in projectiles and penetration applications without radioactive or toxic materials like depleted uranium or lead.
QS Advanced Materials offers various tungsten products for these diverse needs. They provide high-purity tungsten, tungsten-tantalum alloys, and heavy metal alloys like tungsten-nickel-iron and tungsten-nickel-copper. These are designed to leverage tungsten's unique properties like density and high melting point. This ensures customers across industries can find suitable tungsten metal products for their specific requirements - whether for cutting tools, electrical components, or aerospace uses. QS Advanced Materials' range of tungsten products is ready to meet the demand.
